The Local Area

The area represented by the Parish Council is mainly rural, with the possible exception of the Backford Cross portion of Little Stanney, which abuts the edge of Whitby in Ellesmere Port. Traditionally, the area has been used for dairy farming, but more recently for mixed farming.
A feature of the area, and indeed, a lot of Cheshire is the number of ponds. An article by the Upton-by-Chester Local History Group gives an account of Marl Pits, which are the probable origin of most, if not all, ponds in the area.
